ハンピ(Hampi)＠カルナータカ州(Karnataka)/India

インドの「ハンピ(Hampi)」という名前が、ネットサーフィンしていたら引っかかった。
どうやら、インドの南部カルナータカ州には、ハンピという世界遺産があるらしい。

僕の手許にある「Insight Guides India」(1st Edition, APA PRODUCTIONS 1985)によると。

In north Karnataka is Hampi, the site of the capital of the Vijayanagar Empire. These medieval ruins cover some 10 sq miles(26 sq km). Hampi is eight miles(14 km) from Tungabhadra Dam and on the outskirts of Hospet, a town connected to other cities by an excellent train service. The ruins of Hampi, which are most impressive even today, include the Veerupaksha Temple where worship continues to be offered as it was when it was first built. Its central hall was raised by the emperor Krishanadevaraya to commemorate his coronation in 1509-10. The Portuguese traveller Paes, who saw Hampi in its heyday, described it as being as large as Rome, with the palaces of its king more spacious then the castles of Lisbon. Hampi was destroyed in 1565, after the Battle of Talikota, in which the Vijayanagar army was defeated by the forces of the Bijapur conderacy.
